Native North American Footwear

Beauty, Identity, Pride: Native North American Footwear, explored the traditional footwear of North American Indigenous peoples. Origin Studios’ design for this exhibition was inspired by regional elements from across North America. Natural materials were placed beneath objects to identify the geographical zone they came from. Earth tones were used throughout the built environment to contrast large, colourful photographs depicting various regional locations. The graphic development was inspired by the intricacy of beadwork on display.

A dynamic feature within the exhibition was the “discovery drawer” system, which allowed visitors to explore, learn about, and touch materials used in the crafting of footwear. Origin Studios designed the drawer system to present surprises through which visitors could access ancestral knowledge, such as the story of natural pigments or the fur trade.
