Halifax Citadel National Historic Site

Fortress Halifax

A City Shaped by Conflict

The new Halifax Citadel National Historic Site traces the Site’s and city’s histories from the pre‑colonial period to today through four versions of the iconic fort. Overlooking the harbour, the Citadel has long been a physical, visual, and cultural landmark. Beginning with stories and commissioned artworks from the Mi’kmaq Community, visitors move through the historic periods tied to each fortification, ending with the present stone star-shaped structure.

Immersive environments like an eighteenth-century blockhouse and digital interactive tables offer varied experiences for all visitors. Mi’kmaq artworks, historic reproductions, and contemporary photography appear throughout, while interactive stations share first-person stories from each era. There’s something here for everyone.
