The Pier 21 Story & The Canadian Immigration Story

The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 shares the stories of Canada’s immigrants and the history of Pier 21 as a vital gateway to the nation. The Museum’s mandate—to foster public understanding of immigrant experiences and highlight their contributions to culture, economy, and society—is realized in two galleries: the Pier 21 Gallery and the Canadian Immigration Gallery.

The Pier 21 Gallery explores the lives of the one million immigrants who passed through from 1928 to 1971, as well as the people who worked and volunteered there. Its design incorporates the historical building’s wood and painted steel. The Canadian Immigration Gallery is a vibrant space where visitors explore histories through artifacts, graphics, and interactive story stations featuring the Museum’s oral history collection. Both exhibitions foreground first-person voices, giving visitors a vivid sense of the people who shape Canada’s diversity and identity.
