Mission: Afghanistan

In partnership with the Canadian Armed Forces Directorate of History and Heritage, the Museums developed Mission: Afghanistan, a travelling exhibition exploring Canada’s military and civilian involvement in Afghanistan. Artifacts gathered in Afghanistan are displayed alongside video interviews with soldiers, civilians, and politicians, creating a narrative that is both personal and evocative.

Canada’s deployment to Afghanistan (2001–2011) was the nation’s longest war and first major combat mission since Korea. Visitors begin in a high-impact hallway on 9/11, then enter a theatre-in-the-round that contextualizes the conflict, the role of the Canadian Armed Forces, and contributions from other Canadian institutions. Designed for travel, the exhibition features modular, flexible exhibitry to accommodate a variety of host spaces.
